Origin and development
Phonk's roots can be traced back to the 1990s in the southern states of the USA. There, the Memphis rap genre emerged, influenced by artists such as Three 6 Mafia and DJ Paul & Juicy J. The music was characterized by slow, bass-heavy beats and dark, sometimes eerie atmospheres. Today's Phonk Music draws its inspiration from these early influences and combines them with modern trap elements.
Core features

The beats are often slow, but heavy and infused with an unmistakable sense of melancholy. Distorted and sampled vocals from old funk or soul songs are used to create a nostalgic mood that is both somber and alluring. The lyrics can deal with topics such as violence, drugs, street life and personal challenges, which makes the connection to classic gangsta rap.
